About Edmonton Sober Homies
Who we are
At Sober Homies, we are driven by the unwavering belief that compassion, sobriety, and community can transform lives. Our mission is to empower individuals in recovery to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the homeless, providing nourishment for the body and hope for the spirit.
Our Core Values:
1.Compassion: We approach every homeless individual with empathy, understanding that their circumstances do not define their worth. We believe in treating everyone with dignity and respect.
2.Sobriety: We are a team of dedicated sober volunteers who have overcome personal challenges related to addiction. We use our experiences to inspire and support both our peers in recovery and those we serve.
3.Community: We foster a sense of belonging and purpose among our volunteers and the homeless community we serve. We recognize that we are all part of a larger human family, and together, we can create positive change.
Our Commitment:
1.Feeding the Hungry: We strive to alleviate hunger by providing nutritious meals to the homeless. We understand that access to food is a fundamental right, and we are dedicated to ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry.
2.Clothing the Needy: We collect and distribute warm clothing and essential supplies to protect against the harsh realities of life on the streets. We aim to provide comfort and dignity to those in need.
3.Encouraging Recovery: We offer a support system for those in recovery, creating an environment where individuals can heal and grow. We believe that sobriety and service go hand in hand.
4.Raising Awareness: We work tirelessly to educate our communities about the struggles of homelessness and addiction. By raising awareness, we hope to inspire positive change on a broader scale. Sober Homies is more than just an organization; it's a movement driven by individuals who have found hope in recovery and want to share that hope with those who need it most. Together, we believe in the power of sobriety, service, and solidarity to create a world where homelessness is a memory, not a reality.
Meet our founder
Jason Bourgeois is the founder and president of Edmonton Sober Homies, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals in recovery, helping those in need and promoting a life of connection, purpose, and hope. Originally from Prince George, British Columbia, Jason has called Edmonton home for over two decades. Jason’s early years were challenging, an unfortunate and unstable upbringing shaped his journey. After experiencing foster care and living with relatives, he faced struggles with self worth, self-esteem and rebellious attitudes and behaviors that led to drug use, abuse and ultimately addiction. For much of his adult life, Jason battled addiction, homelessness, and frequent encounters with the criminal justice system. Despite these adversities, Jason found the courage to turn his life around. In 2020, he embarked on a transformative journey of recovery. Through personal development, intensive treatment programs, and involvement in 12-step fellowships, he gradually rebuilt his life. During this process, Jason discovered his passion for writing poetry and spoken word, which became a vital part of his healing. Today, Jason celebrates over five years of sobriety. He is a proud husband to his wife Sara, whose strength and love continue to inspire him. He is a sober, providing, and dedicated father to his son River and stepson Kairo. His faith and commitment to a God-centered life are central to his mission. Jason is actively involved in his community, sharing his story and leading weekly meetings with incarcerated men, sharing his recovery and encouraging making postive life choices. He is also preparing to publish a book of his poetry, written throughout his recovery journey. Through Edmonton Sober Homies, Jason has created a space where individuals can find support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. His story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, hard work, and community, and he is committed to inspiring others to believe in the possibility of a fulfilling life after addiction.

How it all started.
It all started with…
It began with just a few people who wanted to do a good deed. One person cooked a pot of soup, while another prepared bannock, and they distributed the food on the streets.
The idea quickly grew after creating a Facebook page, and the group expanded rapidly. The group’s mission is rooted in service work, particularly by practicing altruism, offering support to those struggling with homelessness, and mentoring individuals through the difficulties of early recovery.
The group is self-supported, relying on donations and volunteer efforts. Its members, many with months or years of sobriety, provide guidance and support to newcomers while also giving back to the community. The group's founder emphasizes the importance of giving back as a way to build self-worth and help in recovery. The Sober Homies offer a space for individuals to meet like-minded people and engage in volunteer work.
